The FBI affidavit alleges that Claudio Neves-Valente traveled from Florida to New England, rented a gray Nissan Sentra, and was repeatedly detected near Brown University in the days leading up to a December 13, 2025 mass shooting that occurred inside a campus auditorium, killing two students and injuring nine others.
Authorities say he then traveled to Massachusetts, where an MIT professor with whom he shared a prior academic connection in Portugal was shot and killed at his residence on December 15. The affidavit asserts probable cause that Neves-Valente transported firearms and ammunition across state lines to commit these crimes, while also noting that ballistics show the Brown and Brookline shootings were carried out with different firearms and making no allegation of shots fired outside any building.
